The IQ 10 comes with a 10 year limited warranty and an optional 5-year limited warranty. It has been designed with your family’s safety in mind using lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry with low voltage DC power.

Should I buy a battery now or in the future?

If you’re considering going solar and not sure if now is the right time for you to get a battery, you can always install a solar array that can be easily upgraded to include a battery. We would also recommend taking a look at the tax credits and incentives available for going solar with a battery as you may find adding a battery now is achievable. 

I have solar panels so why do I need a battery during a blackout?

When there’s a grid power outage, your inverter will automatically shut down and stop sending power to your home and the grid. This is so linemen sent to resolve the grid issue do not come in contact with live lines. So, in the event of a power outage, even if you have solar, you won’t have power.

If however, you have Enphase IQ Micro inverters as part of your array, they have Sunlight Backup technology which safely seals your solar production from the grid. During daylight production hours you will still have limited power however as soon as the day reaches low light your array will no longer be able to provide power to your home.

Enphase IQ Micro inverters are compatible with nearly all solar panel makes and models, making it easier to invest in Sunlight Backup for daytime power during a black out. For greater energy security speak to us about a battery solution. 

Battery vs generator

It doesn’t have to be a battery vs generator scenario. Some customers have solar, battery and generator solutions in place.

Batteries and generators fulfill the same need – a back up energy source when the grid is not working.

Batteries when paired with solar fulfill the same function as a generator by storing excess solar energy and having it ready to use in the event of an outage.

Generators use fossil fuel like natural gas, diesel or propane which you have to spend out on in order to run your generator. Some areas don’t have easy access paths to natural gas and putting infrastructure in for propane is a big investment.

Generators are noisy when in operation and can produce toxic exhaust gases. With a battery you don’t have to have that type of infrastructure, cost or organization of fuels in place. Batteries are multifunctional and quiet. You can use them when the grid is operating to further offset your energy costs and you can use them in the same way you would a generator in the event of a grid outage.

Batteries are a little more expensive upfront than generators but when installed as part of a solar project they are eligible for a tax credit which makes them a lot more closely aligned in price with a generators initial outlay. 

Can I retrofit a battery?

Adding a battery to your existing solar system very much depends on your current equipment, especially your inverter set up. You may have to upgrade existing components in order to achieve your energy storage goals.

As each retrofit will be unique to your existing equipment, we’d be happy to review your options based on your current set up.
